Can Eating Microgreens Each Day Keep Cancer Cells Away? - Microgreens as a Preventative According to the Research

The dreaded "C" word….🤧

Nobody wants to talk about it, until they have to. Or until they or someone they love are faced with life changing news. 

Yes, I'm talking about cancer. 

According to the CDC, in 2020, 1,603,844 new cancer cases were reported. About 5.5% of the US population "has" cancer. 

Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. It can start in almost any part of the body and is typically caused by genetic changes that lead to the disruption of normal cell growth and division. As cancer cells multiply, they can form a mass of tissue called a tumor, which can invade surrounding tissues and, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.

All kinds of cancer share the characteristic of abnormal cell growth. When cells become old or are damaged, they should die, the body should remove them by way of detox pathways, and new cells should form. But when abnormal cells grow at an accelerated rate, and sometimes divide and spread, this is when they can become a problem. 

I never write my blog posts with fear at the front of my mind, to induce fear, or to scare someone into buying microgreens. 

But rather, I choose to research and write about these topics- mental heath, gut health, cancer, etc, because, knowledge is power. We don't have to fear something that we understand and something that we educate ourselves about. When we have the proper knowledge, understanding and tools available to us, we can use them to our benefit and to the benefit of others. 

Like so many other things, cancer can be complex, and can be a result of so many various factors other than nutrition.

I understand topics like these can be sensitive. And I will not at all be dismissive of the fact that sometimes all of the possible preventative measures can be taken and someone can seem to do all of the things right, and they still end up with a cancer diagnosis. Someone who is diagnosed must wonder constantly if it was something they did or didn't do, or what they should have done differently, or what life would be like if they had made different choices. They are in a constant fight mode for their life, and that is never something that should be dismissed when so many people are walking through the hardship of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. And all of that must be so difficult to experience. So please understand that it's not always so simple as taking preventative measures to avoid diseases like cancer. And that nobody should ever deal with being blamed or shamed for their diagnosis when they need love, encouragement and support at the most difficult time in their life. 

Like so many other topics that I have researched and written about, nutrition does play a vital role in our overall health and wellness, all the way down to the health of our cells- right where cancer begins to form. And like so many other things, there are preventatives that we can take to keep our bodies in a healthy state that discourages unhealthy and abnormal cell growth. 

Think of your body like an ecosystem. It needs all kinds of things to thrive and to remain in a bioactive state. 

The body's bioactivity refers to the various physiological processes and interactions within the body. This includes the metabolism of nutrients, the functioning of organs and systems, and the responses to external stimuli. Bioactive compounds, such as vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals from food, can influence these processes, impacting overall health. Understanding and supporting the body's bioactivity through a balanced diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices is essential for maintaining well-being.

When the body's bioactivity becomes disrupted through a lack of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, it can encourage disease in the body, and unhealthy or abnormal cell growth. 

The body's bioactivity is intricately linked to cancer development and prevention. Certain bioactive compounds in foods, like antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, may help protect against cellular damage and reduce cancer risk. On the other hand, factors such as a poor diet, inflammation, and oxidative stress can contribute to cancer development.

Maintaining a diet rich in bioactive substances, found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can support the body's natural defense mechanisms. However, it's crucial to consider overall lifestyle factors, such as regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol consumption, to comprehensively reduce cancer risk. 

While many people believe that cancer is genetic, most cancers are not genetic at all, which means that for the most part, we can take action to prevent disease in the body, including cancer, by providing it with what it needs to thrive. 

To support the body's bioactivity and overall health, it needs a variety of essential nutrients and lifestyle factors:

  1. Nutrient-Rich Diet: Adequate intake of vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats from a diverse range of foods.
  1. Hydration: Sufficient water intake to support metabolic processes and cellular functions.
  1. Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps maintain cardiovascular health, control weight, and supports overall well-being.
  1. Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for the body's recovery, hormone regulation, and overall functioning.
  1. Stress Management: Chronic stress can negatively impact bioactivity, so stress reduction techniques are essential.
  1. Avoidance of Harmful Substances: Limiting exposure to tobacco, excessive alcohol, and environmental toxins.

Ensuring a balanced and mindful approach to these factors promotes a bioactive and resilient body.

Notice that a nutrient rich diet is number one on this list. 

Our nutrient intake has a MASSIVE effect on our body's overall health and bioactivity. 

Nutrient deficiencies can lead to those unhealthy or abnormal cells, so it's important that we are paying close attention to our nutrition and providing our  bodies with what they need to thrive. 

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the standard American diet is the culprit of so much disease that is prevalent in the US. In other countries where a whole foods diet is mostly consumed, the risk for disease including cancer is far less compared to America. 

There is scientific evidence that suggests that the adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with an overall reduced risk of incidences of cancer. Mediterranean countries have a much longer life expectancy and even contributes to lower rates of cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, type 2 diabetes, and neoclassical diseases. 

The standard American diet is often made up of way too much sugar, ultra processed and preserved foods, toxic additives and a ridiculously high amount of carbohydrates. 

Kids grow up on soda, other sugary drinks, not enough water, chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese and french fries, and then have their own children and follow these same patterns of behaviors because it's what they were taught. Boxed foods are easy and convenience plays a huge role in how we feed our families in America, instead of health. Because let's face it, we're overestimated, overworked and stressed so much of the time. Who has time to cook a meal at the end of a busy day? 

If most people understood the risks associated with raising their families on the standard American diet, they might just take the extra time to make whole foods, home cooked meals a lot more often. 

I know that this was the case for me. I grew up on McDonald's, like so many others, and I wasn't taught the importance of a whole foods diet until much later in school. I didn't take care of my body properly for the majority of my life, because I didn't think it was that big of a deal. 

Kids don't take educational information seriously when that information is not being modeled to them at home. Most go back home to the cupboard and have a twinkie, a soda and doritos after learning about a healthy well balanced diet at school. Because those this are available to them. 

Sugar is added to nearly every single boxed, preserved food that is marketed towards children, to make it taste better, and maybe even to encourage an addiction to these foods. Sugar is added to cereals, fruit snacks, crackers, juices, and even the cute gummy vitamins that parents give to their kids thinking they're helping to provide them with adequate nutrition. 

The US consumes far more sugar on average than is ever recommended. And this isn't natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables which aren't unhealthy in moderate amounts. This is refined sugar and has been proven to be just as addictive as illicit drugs. That's right! Your kids may be addicted to those sugary drinks or fruit snacks. 

The newest research shows that sugar plays a role in the etiology of various types of cancer and cancer progression. 

I think it's important that we all dramatically change the perception and understanding of our own children or families when it comes to nutrition and whole foods diets, apart from the American standard diet. That we eat for nutrition, and to nourish our bodies to be well. Not for pleasure, or for fun, or because we're bored. Setting this example now is the only way for us to teach future generations how important their nutrition and what they're consuming is when it comes to their health. 

It can be a very difficult change to make. It can be difficult for children to understand why they previously were allowed something that they're not anymore. But, education and knowledge again is power. If we only allow our children and our own families to carry on these patterns of behavior when it comes to what they eat and consume without trying to correct them through modeling the behaviors we hope them to carry on, and cancer and other disease continues to affect more people, what will the US look like in 50 years as far as our health goes? 

When it comes to specific nutrients, there are deficiencies that can lead to cell damage, so its important not to neglect providing them: 

  1. Vitamin D Deficiency: Linked to a higher risk of certain cancers.
  1. Iron Deficiency:Iron is crucial for various cellular functions; deficiency may impact overall health.
  1. Folate Deficiency: Linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly in relation to DNA synthesis and repair.
  1. Vitamin A Deficiency:Associated with an elevated risk of certain cancers, as vitamin A is essential for immune function.

As we have learned, microgreens are powerful nutritional powerhouses! These little seedlings have been shown to be up to 40 times more nutritious than a full grown vegetable. 

You might wonder why we would need all of those extra nutrients. And that's a great question. As I've mentioned before, the health of our soil has deteriorated over time. Nutrients are found to be depleted from once healthy soils that grow the majority of the vegetables and fruits that we consume. This means naturally, the fruits and vegetables in grocery stores are also lacking in essential nutrients. 

Most people are deficient in their nutrition in one area or more. 

Many people choose to supplement their nutrition, but the best way to supplement is by adding whole, raw foods to our diet.

There's a very interesting study I came across that suggests that sulforaphane may protect the DNA since it blocks mutations in DNA that can lead to cancer. 

Sulphorofane has also been shown to slow tumor growth as it inhibits unhealthy cell growth and reduces their ability to spread throughout the body. 

According to one PubMed article, "sulphorofane shows a range of biological activities and health benefits in humans, has been found to be a very promising chemopreventive agent against not only a variety of cancers such as breast, prostate, colon, skin, lung, stomach, and bladder but also against cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes."

Sulforaphane accelerates detox in the body, removes toxins, protects us from disease, and yes, can even  prevent and maybe even fight cancer!

Another interesting study published by PubMed shows a correlation between certain varieties of microgreens that are grown under LED lights, and their antiproliferative cancer properties- specifically the Pea and Radish varieties! This means that these varieties grown under LED, like Dani Greens microgreens are, showed in this study to inhibit tumor and cancer cell growth and have an anti- tumor effect.

It isn't only broccoli shoots that are promising nutritional tools for us to use when it comes to cancer and disease prevention in general.

Because there are ways that we can live a preventative lifestyle, by being mindful about what I've mentioned here, along with providing our bodies the right amount of nutrition they need. 

The idea is to support the body so that it can do all of the work. Our bodies are like a machine. They are simply amazing! The body can detox itself. It can repair itself. It can cleanse itself. All we have to do is support it the right way so it can do what it was designed to do. 

 When we get these things in order and are mindful of what we consume and are providing our bodies with a good amount of nutrients, then we can live a preventative lifestyle that encourages health and wellness in all aspects!
