Can Eating Microgreens Each Day Keep Cancer Cells Away? - Microgreens as a Preventative According to the Research

Can Eating Microgreens Each Day Keep Cancer Cells Away? - Microgreens as a Preventative According to the Research

The dreaded "C" word….🤧

Nobody wants to talk about it, until they have to. Or until they or someone they love are faced with life changing news.

Yes, I'm talking about cancer.

According to the CDC, in 2020, 1,603,844 new cancer cases were reported. About 5.5% of the US population "has" cancer.

Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. It can start in almost any part of the body and is typically caused by genetic changes that lead to the disruption of normal cell growth and division. As cancer cells multiply, they can form a mass of tissue called a tumor, which can invade surrounding tissues and, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.

All kinds of cancer share the characteristic of abnormal cell growth. When cells become old or are damaged, they should die, the body should remove them by way of detox pathways, and new cells should form. But when abnormal cells grow at an accelerated rate, and sometimes divide and spread, this is when they can become a problem.

I never write my blog posts with fear at the front of my mind, to induce fear, or to scare someone into buying microgreens.

But rather, I choose to research and write about these topics- mental heath, gut health, cancer, etc, because, knowledge is power. We don't have to fear something that we understand and something that we educate ourselves about. When we have the proper knowledge, understanding and tools available to us, we can use them to our benefit and to the benefit of others.

Like so many other things, cancer can be complex, and can be a result of so many various factors other than nutrition.

I am not a medical professional and this is not medical advice. Take this information with a grain of salt, do your own research to look into what I say here, and always use your own best judgment to make any lifestyle decisions for yourself and your family.

I understand topics like these can be sensitive. And I will not at all be dismissive of the fact that sometimes all of the possible preventative measures can be taken and someone can seem to do all of the things right, and they still end up with a cancer diagnosis. Someone who is diagnosed must wonder constantly if it was something they did or didn't do, or what they should have done differently, or what life would be like if they had made different choices. They are in a constant fight mode for their life, and that is never something that should be dismissed when so many people are walking through the hardship of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. And all of that must be so difficult to experience. So please understand that it's not always so simple as taking preventative measures to avoid diseases like cancer. And that nobody should ever deal with being blamed or shamed for their diagnosis when they need love, encouragement and support at the most difficult time in their life.

Like so many other topics that I have researched and written about, nutrition does play a vital role in our overall health and wellness, all the way down to the health of our cells- right where cancer begins to form. And like so many other things, there are preventatives that we can take to keep our bodies in a healthy state that discourages unhealthy and abnormal cell growth.

Think of your body like an ecosystem. It needs all kinds of things to thrive and to remain in a bioactive state.

The body's bioactivity refers to the various physiological processes and interactions within the body. This includes the metabolism of nutrients, the functioning of organs and systems, and the responses to external stimuli. Bioactive compounds, such as vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals from food, can influence these processes, impacting overall health. Understanding and supporting the body's bioactivity through a balanced diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices is essential for maintaining well-being.

When the body's bioactivity becomes disrupted through a lack of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, it can encourage disease in the body, and unhealthy or abnormal cell growth.

The body's bioactivity is intricately linked to cancer development and prevention. Certain bioactive compounds in foods, like antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, may help protect against cellular damage and reduce cancer risk. On the other hand, factors such as a poor diet, inflammation, and oxidative stress can contribute to cancer development.

Maintaining a diet rich in bioactive substances, found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can support the body's natural defense mechanisms. However, it's crucial to consider overall lifestyle factors, such as regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol consumption, to comprehensively reduce cancer risk.

While many people believe that cancer is genetic, most cancers are not genetic at all, which means that for the most part, we can take action to prevent disease in the body, including cancer, by providing it with what it needs to thrive.

To support the body's bioactivity and overall health, it needs a variety of essential nutrients and lifestyle factors:

  1. Nutrient-Rich Diet: Adequate intake of vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats from a diverse range of foods.
  1. Hydration: Sufficient water intake to support metabolic processes and cellular functions.
  1. Regular Exercise: Physical activity helps maintain cardiovascular health, control weight, and supports overall well-being.
  1. Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for the body's recovery, hormone regulation, and overall functioning.
  1. Stress Management: Chronic stress can negatively impact bioactivity, so stress reduction techniques are essential.
  1. Avoidance of Harmful Substances: Limiting exposure to tobacco, excessive alcohol, and environmental toxins.

Ensuring a balanced and mindful approach to these factors promotes a bioactive and resilient body.

Notice that a nutrient rich diet is number one on this list.

Our nutrient intake has a MASSIVE effect on our body's overall health and bioactivity.

Nutrient deficiencies can lead to those unhealthy or abnormal cells, so it's important that we are paying close attention to our nutrition and providing our  bodies with what they need to thrive.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the standard American diet is the culprit of so much disease that is prevalent in the US. In other countries where a whole foods diet is mostly consumed, the risk for disease including cancer is far less compared to America.

There is scientific evidence that suggests that the adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with an overall reduced risk of incidences of cancer. Mediterranean countries have a much longer life expectancy and even contributes to lower rates of cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, type 2 diabetes, and neoclassical diseases.

The standard American diet is often made up of way too much sugar, ultra processed and preserved foods, toxic additives and a ridiculously high amount of carbohydrates.

Kids grow up on soda, other sugary drinks, not enough water, chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese and french fries, and then have their own children and follow these same patterns of behaviors because it's what they were taught. Boxed foods are easy and convenience plays a huge role in how we feed our families in America, instead of health. Because let's face it, we're overestimated, overworked and stressed so much of the time. Who has time to cook a meal at the end of a busy day?

If most people understood the risks associated with raising their families on the standard American diet, they might just take the extra time to make whole foods, home cooked meals a lot more often.

I know that this was the case for me. I grew up on McDonald's, like so many others, and I wasn't taught the importance of a whole foods diet until much later in school. I didn't take care of my body properly for the majority of my life, because I didn't think it was that big of a deal.

Kids don't take educational information seriously when that information is not being modeled to them at home. Most go back home to the cupboard and have a twinkie, a soda and doritos after learning about a healthy well balanced diet at school. Because those this are available to them.

Sugar is added to nearly every single boxed, preserved food that is marketed towards children, to make it taste better, and maybe even to encourage an addiction to these foods. Sugar is added to cereals, fruit snacks, crackers, juices, and even the cute gummy vitamins that parents give to their kids thinking they're helping to provide them with adequate nutrition.

The US consumes far more sugar on average than is ever recommended. And this isn't natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables which aren't unhealthy in moderate amounts. This is refined sugar and has been proven to be just as addictive as illicit drugs. That's right! Your kids may be addicted to those sugary drinks or fruit snacks.

The newest research shows that sugar plays a role in the etiology of various types of cancer and cancer progression.

I think it's important that we all dramatically change the perception and understanding of our own children or families when it comes to nutrition and whole foods diets, apart from the American standard diet. That we eat for nutrition, and to nourish our bodies to be well. Not for pleasure, or for fun, or because we're bored. Setting this example now is the only way for us to teach future generations how important their nutrition and what they're consuming is when it comes to their health.

It can be a very difficult change to make. It can be difficult for children to understand why they previously were allowed something that they're not anymore. But, education and knowledge again is power. If we only allow our children and our own families to carry on these patterns of behavior when it comes to what they eat and consume without trying to correct them through modeling the behaviors we hope them to carry on, and cancer and other disease continues to affect more people, what will the US look like in 50 years as far as our health goes?

When it comes to specific nutrients, there are deficiencies that can lead to cell damage, so its important not to neglect providing them:

  1. Vitamin D Deficiency: Linked to a higher risk of certain cancers.
  1. Iron Deficiency:Iron is crucial for various cellular functions; deficiency may impact overall health.
  1. Folate Deficiency: Linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly in relation to DNA synthesis and repair.
  1. Vitamin A Deficiency:Associated with an elevated risk of certain cancers, as vitamin A is essential for immune function.

As we have learned, microgreens are powerful nutritional powerhouses! These little seedlings have been shown to be up to 40 times more nutritious than a full grown vegetable.

You might wonder why we would need all of those extra nutrients. And that's a great question. As I've mentioned before, the health of our soil has deteriorated over time. Nutrients are found to be depleted from once healthy soils that grow the majority of the vegetables and fruits that we consume. This means naturally, the fruits and vegetables in grocery stores are also lacking in essential nutrients.

Most people are deficient in their nutrition in one area or more.

Many people choose to supplement their nutrition, but the best way to supplement is by adding whole, raw foods to our diet.

Because we know that microgreens are so incredibly nutrient dense, they are a great daily supplement to add to any diet.

But, if we want all of the potential benefits of supplementing our nutrition with microgreens, they've got to be consumed daily. That part is super important.

Microgreens are incredibly diverse and easy to use!

Add them to whatever meal you're eating and you're on your way to better health, and to making sure you're providing your body with the nutrients it needs for bioactivity.

My best suggestion is to eat a variety of greens daily by adding different varieties to each meal.

For example:

Breakfast: avocado toast with Broccoli Shoots

Lunch: salad with Sunflower shoots and Radish Shoots

Dinner: toss Pea Shoots on top of whatever meal you're eating.

It's really that simple!

When it comes to cancer prevention, there's one superfood in particular that I want to be sure to bring attention to, that trump all the rest of the greens that Dani Greens offers. I've talked about it before and have highlighted this superfood and will continue to because it's simply amazing the benefits it has to offer.

Broccoli shoots!

Broccoli contains the compound sulforaphane, which is a phytochemical that's particularly high in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, kale, and cauliflower.

Because we know that microgreens are substantially higher in nutrients at the seedling stage of growth than a full grown veggie- we also know that broccoli shoots are packed with sulforaphane!

Sulforaphane is a sulphur based nutrient that is proven to neutralize toxins, as it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sulforaphane neutralizes free radicals in the body, which encourages new, healthy cell growth. Because of sulphorofane's anti-inflammatory properties, it's particularly effective at reducing inflammation in the body, and inflammation is where all disease begins.

There's a very interesting study I came across that suggests that sulforaphane may protect the DNA since it blocks mutations in DNA that can lead to cancer.

Sulphorofane has also been shown to slow tumor growth as it inhibits unhealthy cell growth and reduces their ability to spread throughout the body.

According to one PubMed article, "sulphorofane shows a range of biological activities and health benefits in humans, has been found to be a very promising chemopreventive agent against not only a variety of cancers such as breast, prostate, colon, skin, lung, stomach, and bladder but also against cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes."

Sulforaphane accelerates detox in the body, removes toxins, protects us from disease, and yes, can even  prevent and maybe even fight cancer!

There is a whole lot more to be said about sulforaphane. I have written some additional information about Broccoli Shoots and the benefits of sulphorofane here if you'd like to learn more about it

Another interesting study published by PubMed shows a correlation between certain varieties of microgreens that are grown under LED lights, and their antiproliferative cancer properties- specifically the Pea and Radish varieties! This means that these varieties grown under LED, like Dani Greens microgreens are, showed in this study to inhibit tumor and cancer cell growth and have an anti- tumor effect.

It isn't only broccoli shoots that are promising nutritional tools for us to use when it comes to cancer and disease prevention in general.

While some microgreens varieties, like Broccoli Shoots, have been shown through scientific study to inhibit unhealthy cells and cell growth, all are nutrient dense, are packed with vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and other compounds that lead to optimal health when consistently consumed.

When we're talking about cancer prevention or the prevention of any disease in the body, we're talking about providing an environment inside of our bodies that unhealthy or damaged cells cannot survive in. This means also creating an environment for health and wellness.

There are various factors that play a role in creating this bioactivity inside of the human body, which cancer and other disease cannot live inside of.

A bioactive environment is one that means when a cell dies or is unhealthy, it is effectively removed from the body via its detox pathways, that our immune system's health is in tip top shape, that our liver is functioning properly, that the lymphatic system can drain properly, and that our digestive health is in good working order. Bioactivity generally means that an ecosystem is self sustaining and works together to provide each individual part with what it needs to sustain itself.

The absolute building blocks of achieving a healthy environment inside of the body starts with our nutrition.

Without adequate nutrition, our bodies cannot function the way that they were meant to, and then, symptoms eventually arise which can become cause for concern. One symptom can lead to another, and when significant inflammation is present, this is when disease has an environment to sustain itself.

It's no secret that microgreens are a superfood. Or that they are super nutrient dense and are an excellent source of raw nutrition for us to consume consistently because of that.

But it should also be no secret that microgreens can absolutely prevent cancer, based on the research available.

We should understand that each day we are exposed to environmental toxins that are absorbed by our bodies, no matter the precautions that we take. These environmental toxins are in the form of oxygen, water, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, plastics, plus molds and other bacterias.

This means, living a detox lifestyle is always a good idea for everyone. It is always a good idea for us to be aware and to acknowledge by making sure we are eating a healthy diet, getting enough exercise, that we are drinking enough water, that we are getting enough sunshine each day, and that we are getting enough sleep every night, so that our body's can effectively work to remove the environmental toxins that we are constantly being exposed to.

This kind of detox lifestyle can even further include paying attention to the ingredients found in the products you are buying and consuming daily. This includes personal care products, household cleaning products, laundry soaps, makeups, etc. Unfortunately, many times these kinds of products are full of unhealthy and toxic ingredients that we then put all over our environment and our bodies to breath into our lungs, or to absorb into the skin. This only means that our bodies then have to work harder to get rid of these environmental toxins. Reducing the environmental toxins that we are in control of is a really great idea!

Some people don't think that the effects of these kinds of products have any real impact on their health, however, think of how many different toxins you're putting in and on your body each day and multiple times a day. For example, you shower daily and use certain products everyday, then you use your skincare products, then you put on your makeup, perfumes, etc. You wear clothing that may have been washed using laundry soap that has toxic ingredients in it, and your skin absorbs whatever is put on to it. Then you wear those clothing items all day, everyday. You clean your home with products that contain toxic ingredients. You wash your dishes with detergents that have toxic ingredients in them. And then you do this the next day, and the next, and so on. It really adds up when we start to take a closer look at the effects of these products on our health. Many of these products are carcinogenic in nature, which means, they have been found to cause cancer.

You might wonder how this is legal. Unfortunately, it is perfectly legal and most of the products that people use everyday in their homes and on their bodies, and even in the boxed and ultra processed foods they eat, have them. Most people have no idea of what they're really consuming all day everyday and how it could effect their health long term.

All of these factors play their part when it comes to our health, and living this detox lifestyle. So that our bodies are adequately supported and provided the best conditions to properly clean and heal themselves.

The "C" word doesn't have to be scary. We don't have to sit around hoping that our health is in optimal condition and that we won't get that bad news nobody wants to get. Because there are ways that we can live a preventative lifestyle, by being mindful about what I've mentioned here, along with providing our bodies the right amount of nutrition they need.

The idea is to support the body so that it can do all of the work. Our bodies are like a machine. They are simply amazing! The body can detox itself. It can repair itself. It can cleanse itself. All we have to do is support it the right way so it can do what it was designed to do.

When we get these things in order and are mindful of what we consume and are providing our bodies with a good amount of nutrients, then we can live a preventative lifestyle that encourages health and wellness in all aspects!

Microgreens are the perfect supplement to add to your diet as a preventative measure, when you're looking to get your health in order.

Microgreens improve digestion, aid in weight management, can regulate blood pressure, support immune system function, and have the ability to not only regulate these aspects of your health, but they can also help your body to heal so that you can live a preventative detox lifestyle.

I thoroughly enjoy researching the health benefits of microgreens and for the purpose of educating my friends, customers and neighbors. Having a local, Yuba City Microgreens farm right in your neighborhood, and the ability to buy locally grown organic greens at the push of a button, is a great resource for you to use in order to support your best overall health and wellness. And to not only support your health and wellness, but to also support the Yuba Sutter area as a whole by supporting a local business who has something valuable to offer its neighbors.

We don't have to fear something that we understand well and especially not when we have the tools we need to address them actively.

Making lifestyle changes can be most difficult because we are all creatures of habit and of comfort, and those unhealthy habits can be hard for us to break in order to form new healthier ones. But when we make the decision to do something, we absolutely can form new healthier habits that promote health, longevity and overall wellness.

It's important that if you will use microgreens as a supplement, that you are eating them daily. Subscribe to Dani Greens microgreens deliveries weekly and get organically grown microgreens delivered to your home fresh from harvest each and every week for the ansolute best results. Leave the hard work to me, and let me help you to start building those healthier habits.

These changes don't take place overnight either. The body as a well oiled and functioning machine can take a lot of time to heal when damage has been done. But don't be discouraged by that either. This is why it is important not to view your health via diets and temporary fixes that give you immediate results. While you may notice positive changes pretty quickly when consuming microgreens daily, like better digestion, some changes may take a lot more time.

I find that making these kinds of changes to our lifestyles a little at a time and slowly working toward the place we hope to be at gives the best long lasting results. It might sound overwhelming to dump all of the products you use or at least the majority of them overnight, and to get all new non toxic ones. Or to toss every ultra processed food product in your cupboard. But you don't have to do that unless you are mentally (and financially) prepared to. Get rid of one thing at a time and replace it with a healthier choice.

One of the best immediate changes you can make is subscribing to microgreens deliveries and adding them to your daily diet.

Dani Greens offers a variety of options that can meet any family size's needs. I offer individual clamshells which are 2.5-3 ounces of greens each, depending on variety. I offer the 5 Greens Mix Sample Box which includes around 2 ounces of each Dani Greens variety in a good sized box. And I offer full tray options so that you'll receive a whole tray of freshly harvested greens that will leave your fridge fully stocked for up to 2 weeks with organic and nutrient rich greens.

Place your order for weekly subscription to get 20% off of the one time purchase option at and I will grow, harvest, package and deliver your order to your front door every Tuesday evening.

Dani Greens wants to see my neighbors not only surviving, but living, and living well, because when we are living well, our community will be well!

And we all want to see the Yuba Sutter area living its best life.

I hope that what I share with all of you inspires you to be empowered to live well. And to be well.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to meet you and to be your personal microgreens farmer, so that you can be on your way to your best YOU.

Dani 💚
